This file provides information not included in the Software Guide. This information may be helpful in diagnosing potential problems with the MP drivers.

1. General Notes:
Important
- Some USB hubs may experience problems with MP Drivers. If this happens, connect the machine directly to the USB port on the PC,
or change the USB port that the machine is connected to.
- With certain applications, on Windows 98 or Me, that monitor the removable disks on the machine, the PC performance may get slow,
or printing/scanning may not be performed correctly. Closing such applications will solve the problems.
- When you connect the machine to your PC, the drive that relates to the Card Reader may not appear in Windows Explorer.
This behavior can occur if you map a network drive to the next available drive letter after the local volumes and CD-ROM
drives have been assigned drive letters.
If you experience this problem, you should assign the network drive to any other drive letters and reboot your PC.
- When working with very large files, Windows may run low on virtual memory and not function properly.
In this case, please refer to your Windows documentation on how to increase your virtual memory setting.
Printing (Windows 98/Me)
- To enable the BJ Status Monitor, enable bi-directional communication in Windows.
From the [Start] menu, click [Settings], then select [Printers] to open the Printer Properties dialog box.
Go to the [Details] tab and click the [Spool Settings...] button, then select [Enable bi-directional support for this printer].
- The BJ Status Monitor cannot be used, when the printer is used as a network printer.
- If you exit Windows while the printer is printing a file, the job information may not be updated.
In this case, the same job will be activated again the next time you run Windows.
Printing (Windows 2000/XP)
- With certain applications, the [Copies] setting is non-effective when setting is attempted from the printer driver.
In such cases, specify the setting in the applications' [Print] dialog box.
- With certain applications, if you attempt multiple-copy printing of a document with [Collate] checked on the printer driver's
[Page Setup] tab or in the application's [Print] dialog box, printing will not be done correctly.
To work around this, uncheck [Collate] before printing.
- With certain applications, printing may not be done properly if [Print Type] or [Halftoning] is set to [Auto].
In this case, start the [Print Advisor] on the [Main] tab and be sure to select [Print a top-quality photo] or
[Print tables and charts].
Alternatively, set [Print Quality] on the [Main] tab to [Custom] and select a setting other than [Auto] for [Halftoning].
Next set [Color Adjustment] to [Manual] and select a setting other than [Auto] for [Print Type].
- When printing graduated or graphics-intensive print data, sometimes print data may not be printed.
This occurs when there is not enough free space on your hard disk to temporarily store the data.
To remedy this, make sure there is 40-50 MB of free space on the drive where Windows XP or Windows 2000 is installed.
Alternatively, use the [Spool Folder] setting of [Server Properties] to allocate sufficient space for the spool folder.
- If, during printing, you cancel the print job from the Printer's folder, there will be a delay before printing actually stops.
- In some cases, printing will fail if there isn't enough virtual memory available.
You can remedy this by increasing the size of the paging file.
To do this, open the [System Properties] dialog box by double-clicking [System] in the Control Panel or right-clicking
[My Computer] and choosing [Properties].
Then click the [Advanced] tab, click [Performance Options...], click [Change...], specify the new paging file size, click [Set],
and click [OK].
- Do not change the [Print Processor] setting on the [Advanced] tab in the Printer Properties dialog box.
If you change the setting, the following functions cannot be used:
- [Page Layout Printing], [Poster Printing], [Booklet Printing], and [Duplex Printing] on the [Page Setup] tab
- All functions of the [Stamp/Background] tab
- [Preview before printing] on the [Main] tab
- The following functions cannot be used if you uncheck [Enable advanced printing features] on the [Advanced] tab in the
Printer Properties dialog box:
- [Page Layout Printing], [Poster Printing], [Booklet Printing], [Duplex Printing], [Reverse Order],
and [Collate] on the [Page Setup] tab
- All functions of the [Stamp/Background] tab
- [Preview before printing] on the [Main] tab
- [Reduce spool data size] in the [Set Print Quality] dialog box
- The following functions cannot be used when you are using an application that does not allow EMF spooling
(for example, Adobe PhotoShop LE and MS Photo Editor):
- [Page Layout Printing], [Poster Printing], [Booklet Printing], [Duplex Printing], [Reverse Order],
and [Collate] on the [Page Setup] tab
- All functions of the [Stamp/Background] tab
- [Preview before printing] on the [Main] tab
- The following functions cannot be used if you check [Print to file] in your application's [Print] dialog box:
- [Page Layout Printing], [Poster Printing], [Booklet Printing], [Duplex Printing], [Reverse Order],
and [Collate] on the [Page Setup] tab
- All functions of the [Stamp/Background] tab
- [Preview before printing] on the [Main] tab
- With some applications, when printing with [Page Layout Printing] on the [Page Setup] tab set to [2-up Printing] or greater,
certain page images may get cropped. If this happens, use the application to adjust the layout of the affected pages.
- When carrying out poster printing or stamp/background printing, the displayed number of pages of the document in the print
queue is greater than that of the actual document.
- The colors in the screen display of the application software may be different from the colors in the preview display.
- The colors in the preview display may be different from the colors in the print result.
- Since the resolution in the preview display differs from the printing resolution, text and lines in the preview display
may appear different from the actual print result.
- In some applications, the printing is divided into multiple jobs. In this case the preview display can only display the
job being printed, and the display may differ from the display intended by the user.
- The preview display cannot be used in the following cases:
- During printing when the printer icon is right-clicked and [Use Printer Offline] is selected
- During printing outside the specified times when [Available from] is set on the [Advanced] tab in the Printer
Properties dialog box
- When using a network printer, if the client's BJ Status Monitor is activated, a command is sent to the machine to obtain its status.
If you have checked [Notify when remote documents are printed] on the [Advanced] tab of the print server's [Server Properties]
dialog box, a print completion notification message is displayed on the client in response to each command.
To stop these messages appearing, uncheck [Notify when remote documents are printed] on the [Advanced] tab of the print server's
[Server Properties] dialog box, then restart the print server to make the setting effective.
- If you exit Windows while the machine is printing a file, the job information may not be updated. In this case,
the same job will be activated again the next time you run Windows.
- When using a Windows 2000 or XP system logged on to a Workgroup instead of a Domain as a Server PC to share the printer,
printing from a Client PC may not work correctly.
If you experience this problem, you should either log on to a Domain, or setup an account on the Server PC for each user
in the Workgroup that will print from a Client PC.
Scanning
- Make sure that you have adequate disk space available when scanning large documents at high resolutions.
For instance, scanning a full page color document at 600 dpi requires a minimum of 300MB of free disk space.
- Only run one application at a time that is actively linked to ScanGear.
Do not open more than one application that is actively linked to ScanGear.
Also, do not open ScanGear more than once to acquire an image in the same application.
- When scanning large images at high resolutions, the progress bar may stop at 0% or your computer may stop responding,
depending on the size of the file and the limitations of the applications being used.
If this happens, cancel the action (for example by clicking the progress bar's cancel button), and then increase the virtual
memory available and perform the scan again.
Selecting smaller area at lower resolutions may also resolve the problem.
Also, you can scan the image from the Toolbox and import the resulting file into your application.
- With Windows 2000 or XP, the TWAIN data source may not open correctly from time to time when the system file is in the NTFS format.
For security reasons, the TWAIN module cannot be written to the "winnt" directory. For details, contact your system administrator.
- Always close the ScanGear main window before you exit the parent application program.
- Certain personal computers (including laptops) may not restart correctly from standby mode when the printer is attached.
If this occurs, please reboot the computer.
- You may not be able to use the [SCAN] key, [Black Start] or [Color Start] key in scan mode on the machine after you install the driver.
In this case, restart the system.
- When you preview or scan an image with a relatively uniform background, the Auto Tone function may change its coloring.
If this occurs, reset the Auto Tone.
2. Application Notes:
Printing (Windows 98/Me)
- Lotus Word Pro 97 / Freelance 97(Lotus)
When [Halftoning] on the [Set Print Quality] dialog box of the printer driver is set to [Dither] or [Diffusion],
color data may print in monochrome depending on the data.
In this case, change [Halftoning] to [Dither(Fast)] or [Auto].
- Microsoft Word 97 (Microsoft Corp.)
When [Halftoning] on the [Set Print Quality] dialog box of the printer driver is set to [Auto], certain lines may not be printed.
In this case, change [Halftoning] to [Dither(Fast)], [Dither], or [Diffusion].
- Microsoft Word Version 7.0 (Microsoft Corp.)
When using Microsoft Word Version 7.0, documents designated for enlargement/reduction printing may not be enlarged or reduced
as specified.
To use the largement/reduction function, first select [Start] - [Settings] - [Printers], and right-click on the name of the
printer you use.
Then select [Set as Default], and specify the paper size in the Properties - [Page Setup] tab. Now you are ready to start
the application.
If you are not using the enlargement/reduction function, or if you are printing after clicking on the [Close] button to close
the Print dialog box, the printer prints using the specified paper size.
- CorelDRAW! 6.0 (Corel Co.)
In some cases printer driver settings may not be valid.
If this should occur, save the printing data, and close CorelDRAW! 6.0.
Then select [Start] - [Settings] - [Printers], right-click on the name of the printer you use.
Then select Properties. Now enter the printer driver settings, start CorelDRAW! 6.0 again and print the document.
- Some software packages may cancel enlargement/reduction settings when the printer Properties window is closed and reopened.
Enlargement/reduction ratios are set in terms of the ratio between the specified document size and the printer paper size.
If this happens, you can print at the proper enlargement/reduction ratio by printing immediately after setting the
enlargement/reduction ratio.
- When printing using the page layout function, some applications may move data from one page onto the next.
Printing (Windows 2000/XP)
- Microsoft Word 2002/Microsoft Word 2000/Microsoft Corporation
If you specify a value greater than one for the [Pages per sheet] setting in Word's [Print] dialog box,
do not use [Page Layout Printing] setting on the driver's [Page Setup] tab.
If you specify values greater than one for both settings, printing will not be done correctly.
When you want to print more than one page per sheet, use one setting or the other to specify it.
- Microsoft Word 2002/Microsoft Word 2000/Microsoft Corporation
When using the [Scale to paper size] setting in the [Print] dialog box, do not use [Scaled Printing] setting on the printer
driver's [Page Setup] tab. If used, Word's [Scale to paper size] setting will be overridden by the printer driver's
[Printer Paper Size] setting on the [Page Setup] tab when scaling to fit.
- Microsoft Word 2002/Microsoft Word 2000/Microsoft Corporation
When Word's [Allow A4/Letter paper resizing] feature is enabled, if [Orientation] in Word's [Page Setup] dialog box is set to
[Portrait] and the driver's [Orientation] setting is specified as [Landscape], printing is not done correctly.
To avoid this, disable [Allow A4/Letter paper resizing] before printing.
To access this feature, open the [Options] dialog box from Word's [Tools] menu and click the [Print] tab.
- Microsoft Word/Microsoft Corporation
When changing [Paper size] and [Orientation], do it using Word's settings, not the printer driver's.
- Microsoft Word/Microsoft Corporation
When selecting [Scaled Printing] or [Fit-to-Page Printing] in the [Printing Type] on the [Page Setup] tab, do this:
- Open Word's [Print] dialog box.
- Open the printer driver setup window and on the [Page Setup] tab select [Printing Type] and click [OK].
- Without starting printing, close the [Print] dialog box.
- Open Word's [Print] dialog box again.
- Open the printer driver setup window and click [OK] again.
- Start printing.
- Microsoft Excel 2002/Microsoft Corporation
If the "Allow A4 and letter paper sizes to be changed" setting is enabled in Excel 2002 and the "Paper Size" that was set on the
"Page Setup" tab of the Printer Properties screen differs from the paper size that was set in Excel (one is set to A4 and the
other to Letter), the data is printed according to the Printer Properties paper size.
If a problem occurs, match the Printer Properties paper size to the paper size that was set in Excel.
Alternatively, select [Options] from the [Tools] menu of Excel, clear the "Allow A4 and letter paper sizes to be changed"
setting on the "International" tab, and then print the data.
- Lotus Organizer 2.1/97/Lotus Corporation
Lotus Organizer will print in color even though monochrome printing has been selected.
To stop this, check [Grayscale Printing] in the printer driver.
- Photoshop/Adobe Systems Inc.
Printing may not be done if you don't have system administrator privileges.
Log on with system administrator privileges to print.
- Lotus Notes/Lotus Corporation
The system can lock up with certain print jobs. Make sure that in Notes' [Page Layout] settings you specify top and bottom
margins of 0.9 in. or 1.1 in.
- Microsoft Outlook/Microsoft Corporation
If you cancel printing from the application, the next print job will crash.
On the Printer Properties' [Advanced] tab, select spooling for the print document.
- CorelDraw 8/Corel Corporation
There are instances where problems arise if you try to open the printer driver setup window from CorelDraw 8.0.
For instance, a crash may occur or characters may be corrupted.
To get round this, open the printer driver setup window from the [Printers] folder, specify the settings you want,
then print from the application. This problem does not occur with CorelDraw 9.0.
- Illustrator/Adobe Systems Inc.
If Bitmap Printing takes effect, printing may take time or some data may not be printed.
Print after clearing the [Bitmap Printing] check box in the [Print] dialog box.
Scanning
- Some applications may close ScanGear automatically after scanning.
- Some application programs may hide the TWAIN user interface. In this case, refer to the application programer's manual
to find out the required setting changes to show the TWAIN user interface.
- When scanning full page images into a Microsoft Office application (such as Word, PowerPoint or Excel),
it is recommended that you use the Custom Insert command in the Insert Picture from Scanner or Camera dialog box.
The image may otherwise not be scanned correctly.
- Some applications, such as Microsoft Word 2000, Excel 2000 and PowerPoint 2000, will not allow scanning of multi-page documents.
These applications will only accept the first page scanned.
In this case, please scan each page individually.
- Images imported from Corel WordPerfect 10 may not be imported correctly.
If this happens increase the virtual memory available and scan the image again.
This should solve the problem.
- Images will not be properly imported to Lotus Word Pro when WIA-Canon MP730 is selected as the scanner and documents
are scanned from the document feeder.
Scan documents from the flatbed to solve this problem. (MP730 model only)
Faxing
- When faxing a document from Microsoft Excel with the option "Entire workbook" selected, the fax job may result in an error.
Sending each sheet as a separate fax job, instead of all pages as an entire workbook, will successfully transmit the pages.
(Fax model only)
- Microsoft Excel XP may not always work correctly when sending a document as a fax using the MP Fax driver and with the
option Allow A4/Letter Paper Resizing (Tools/Options/International tab) enabled in Microsoft Excel XP.
Disable (uncheck) the option Allow A4/Letter Paper Resizing in Excel XP, and the document will transmit correctly.

- Some Russian and Polish characters are not accepted in the "Name" field of the "Send Fax" dialog when sending a fax.
